Single strobe light - class 4
Understanding ambient light - link to the reading.
1. read the link above, and complete the turn and talk and one written response (handout)
The equipment:
Speedlight - the portable external flashes that can mount onto you your camera using a hot shoe (aka external flash or hot show flash)
Strobe - the stable flashes that produce at least double the light of a speedlight (aka studio flash)
Umbrella -shoot through and reflector
Soft box - creates a diffused light by transmitting light through some scattering material, or by reflecting light off a second surface to diffuse the light
The shoot:
All-flash umbrella portrait - use this link to walk you through visual examples of the umbrella shoot (they are also on your handout)
In a nutshell, you will first learn about the equipment for flash photography. Then, we will learn about creating an all-flash umbrella portrait. Next week, we will build on this to include multiple flashes.

Today we will build on last week's lessons. During today's class, you will learn how to wireless sync additional strobe lights. Please see the attachment above for the directions for this part 2 shoot.
Your single strobe shoot and multiple strobe shoot need to be ready for presentation on April 4th.

IGNORE ALL BELOW OLD STUFF - ou need a model. At least one of these shots (the hand one) needs to be of our grade 12 photographers. We will use this pic for the gallery portrait. We can easily get this pic during a class which will allow you to use any model you choose. Think about the mood of the shots as well as the quality of the light. For other ideas, think back to the grade 10 shoot where you moved one light around to get a variety of effects. Or, do a Google search for ideas.
The main aim of this shoot is for you to experiment with the ways you can shape light using speed lights and strobes, and the various combinations of building those lights. Be sure to have some shots with each "tool" that we have (i.e.: umbrella, soft box, etc). Also, be sure to have some shots that include 2 and 3 light sources.
The set ups:
Flash or strobe as the key light
Flash bounce (need a barn door to block any spill light) (it bounces back onto the subject, is indirect light)
Strobe with the umbrella
Strobe with the soft box
Flash or strobe as rim light/hair light (you can only see the subtle light through the back of the head/hairs)
Set up a back light on the backdrop and then use any of the above in any combination.
Two light source
Three light source
The portrait of a photographer with camera in hands where the camera is light up with it's own soft spot light (like Yousef Karsh)
